Updated: Jan 8, 2023

G'day mate! If you're looking to upgrade the security of your home or business, so you wont get locked out, fitting a mortise lock is a great option. These handy devices are a trusted choice in Australia for added security, and with a bit of elbow grease and a bit of know-how, they're easy to install yourself. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to fit a mortise lock:

Step 1: Gather your materials. You'll need a mortise lock, screws, a drill, a drill bit, a screwdriver, a tape measure, and a pencil.

Step 2: Measure the door. Measure the thickness of your door and the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole for the lock cylinder. This will help you make sure you get the right size mortise lock for your door.

Step 3: Mark the location for the mortise lock. Hold the mortise lock against the door and use a pencil to mark the spot where the lock will go on the door edge.

Step 4: Drill the holes for the lock to go into the door using a spade bit. Make sure you mark the depth of the hole.

Step 5: Using a chisel make the holes square so that it will except the body of the mortise lock.

Step 6: Drill holes for key hole, lock cylinder and handles on the edge of the door.

Step 7: Chisel out mortise lock face plate to make flush with the door.

Step 8: Insert lock into the door and secure with screws.

Step 9: Attach handles, escutcheons and lock cylinders for your lock.

Step 10: test the operation of the lock

Step 11: Mark the position of the latch and lock bolt on the door frame.

Step 12: Drill or chisel holes for latch and bolt holes in door frame. Chisel strike plate face area making the strike flush with the frame.

Step 13: Check the operation of the lock. Check with the door closed that the lock is working correctly.

And there you have it! With a bit of elbow grease and a bit of know-how, you can easily fit a mortise lock to your entrance door like a true blue Aussie. Just remember, if you're not sure about any part of the process, it's always best to consult with a professional locksmith for assistance.
